FRIDAY NITE SUPPER CLUB...OUTDOOR STYLE

How it began...

Back before I was a mom and wife, I lived in many places. My favorite was Traverse City, MI. It's a small town on the shores of Lake Michigan that is just beautiful, has some great shopping and good restaurants. I spent 7 years as a bartender at a place called Grand Traverse Resort. I worked on the 17th floor of a tower that overlooked expansive and well groomed golf courses and the East arm of Grand Traverse Bay. One thing I loved and now miss-was the opportunity to whip up creative cocktails and of course the gourmet food! The lounge was the kind of place where we made chocolate martini's often and the restaurant had offerings like pan-seared Ahi tuna, mushroom risotto, and cream of asparagus soup.  Yum-to all. Fast forward five years and meals consist of orange slices, turkey taco night and whole bunch of "this looks kinda yucky Mom!" lol-I wouldn't trade it for the world-but a little gourmet girls getaway would be nice.

Thus Friday Nite Supper Club was born. A few girlfriends wanting to get out but not go out.

The first one was in my garage-it was a rainy day in May! I put a rug and our patio set in there, had a bunch of white candles in mason jars, pretty plates and silverware holders-props from inside the house too like a big mirror and cabinet-it was pretty for a garage!

We had an around the world theme-we each brought beer from a microbrew or different country. I made menus for our dinner selections. We had grilled pizzas-like Apricot and Prosciutto that had the yummiest freshest ingredients. We all brought part of the ingredients and then everyone pitched in to cook. We sat outside and laughed and had a ball til the wee hours-It was great!

So now that the weather is warming it's time for the Supper Club to resume. Here's a few ideas for some spring supper club action of your own...

Linguine with Sauteed Morels

  • 1 pound linguine
  • 1/2 pound fiddleheads
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 pound baby leeks, washed, trimmed, and cut into thirds on a bias
  • 1 1/2 cups dandelion greens or sorrel, washed
Directions
1.     In a large pot of boiling, salted water, cook the linguine until al dente. Drain and transfer to a large bowl.
2.     Meanwhile, remove the papery particles from the fiddleheads. Fill a medium bowl with cool water; add 1 teaspoon salt and the lemon juice. Add the fiddleheads, and push them down into the water several times to clean them. Transfer them to a steamer rack in a saucepan and steam, covered, about 4 to 5 minutes.
3.     Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the leeks and saute for 2 to 3 minutes, until soft. Add the fiddleheads and cook 1 to 2 minutes more, until warm and golden. Stir in the dandelion greens. Toss the mixture with the pasta, season with salt and pepper, and serve. Serves 4. :)
Sauteed Morels

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/4 to 1/2 pound morels
  • 1/4 cup Chicken Stock, or low-sodium canned
  • 1 tablespoon white wine
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Directions
1.     Melt the butter in a large pan over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook until soft and golden.
2.     Add the morels and cook, stirring, until they begin to exude their juices, about 2 to 3 minutes.
3.     Add the stock and wine and cook 2 minutes more until heated through. Season with salt and pepper and serve.

And there must be yummy beverage...
Key Lime Pie Martini

1 1/2 oz Ke Ke Beach® key lime liqueur
1 1/2 oz Absolut® Vanilla vodka
1/3 oz Rose's® lime juice
1/3 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
1 1/2 oz half-and-half

Coat the rim of chilled cocktail glass with lime and dip rim in a mixture of 2 tablespoons crushed graham crackers and 1 tablespoon powdered sugar(on a flat plate). Set glass aside. Mix Vodka, Ke Ke Beach Liqueur, Rose's and fresh lime juice, and half and half in a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes. Shake vigorously and pour into the set aside chilled martini cocktail glass. Serve.

A little blog love!

Today's shout out goes to...

BIRCH + BIRD

They say....
Rachel + Lily  are  friends, wives, mothers and vintage junkies extraordinaire! Thrifting, simple living and great design are some of our greatest passions and our Etsy shop (www.birchandbird.etsy.com) was created out love for found items and out of necessity…the only other option was to accept that we would end up on an episode of Hoarders! (that's funny!)

Design blogs have provided us with endless inspiration for our own homes and we thought it was high time to return the favour and show the world (or at least a few people!) how to incorporate thrifty treasures into everyday living spaces. We strongly feel that it’s the mix of old and new and pieces you love mixed with a dash of the unexpected that brings life to a home and allows the space to reflect one’s personality.
Please follow our journeys through life, thrift and design with us…we hope to brighten your days with things we find along the way!

I say...
I love this blog-they have that vintage thing going on but in a simple, clean, modern way-good stuff! Sometimes it's hard sifting through the junk at a garage sale or figuring out what to do with an old vase or furniture piece you "acquired" from your mom ,who got it from your grandma-you know what I mean!? They do it with style! They have lots content not just vintage finds! This blog is where I first saw the work of featured Etsian-Geninne! READ THIS BLOG next time you go surfing!

MONDAY INSPIRATIONS: Bunnies, Birdies, Branches, and Blooms....

That's right it's finally time for me to decorate for spring! I'm pretty sure almost everywhere else is in full on spring mode-plants beginning to sprout and the weather is slowly warming, but up here in Northern MI-it's COLD! No plants, no green, not yet anyway, but it is the official first day of spring!

I did some spring cleaning over the weekend-took tons of clothing and baby stuff to goodwill and cleaned out the garage a bit. I also did some much needed organizational stuff in the bedrooms and some good ol' fashioned scrubbing of everything! AHH-doesn't that feel good? I love it when the house is clean-not just "picked up" I'm talking-your mother-in-law is coming to stay with you-clean! :)

Anyway the partial spring cleaning event made me realize that I need to get some cute little spring things out and around the house this week. All week I'll be focusing on some seasonal decorating inspiration. I have some crafts planned and some more painted windows coming this Friday and I just might finally paint the hall and walls by the staircase-blue???...it should be fun!

Adding little things to your decor for the season is pretty easy-toss out a fresh pillow or new duvet, maybe if it's in the budget-- a pretty rug. Art can really liven up your space too-head over to Etsy for budget friendly prints or do a little DIY of your own! Don't forget to get out some cute spring jewelry and accessories for yourself as well! Here's some of my springtime decorating Monday Inspirations....

FRIDAY HUMBLE ABODE-SPRING THINGS FOR THE HOME!

Wow is it Friday already! This week was a whirlwind it seems-and many of my plans  for beginning the staircase project have been pushed back a bit! I have decided that the negotiable wall color is no-longer in limbo and have settled on a custom grey that is medium in tone and warm. The stairs and trim are a definite BM Atrium White and I'm scrapping the birds and branches in favor of a less busy look with a graphic trim as the runner (not sure about the graphic print yet though.)

Well, what have I been doing? Getting my ETSY shop stocked that's what! I actually signed up in December and have been hem-hawing and plotting since then. The fire started this week to just do it-take the plunge-get it up and running! The reason for the fire is that I donated one of my pieces to help the New Zealand earthquake victims-and needed a link to my item for people to bid on-so I had to put something in my shop! So now I have one thing in there and lots of things in the works! It was the inspiration I needed to get some stuff done so check out some stuff on my ETSY this week!

If you are interested in helping the New Zealanders-there is a link to the auction on the right of my page-just click and you're there! Lots of really cute things to bid on from stores and crafters-lots of kid stuff (Lil Magoolie is the hosting blog-she's located in Christchurch, NZ-the epicenter of the quake) Her blog is super cute and quite popular and earned a top ten spot for fave kid design blogs in "The Homies" contest on Apartment Therapy and you might have seen it on my blog too a few weeks ago--check it out here. Thanks for looking!

MONDAY INSPIRATIONS: A LITTLE GREEN PLEASE...

Well, I am starting to crave a little green and thought I'd bring that into focus this week. When I started thinking about spring and the world turning green again I felt pretty happy. I know it's going to be wet and muddy and sloppy-but that's ok as long it gets here soon!

Green-yes, muddy, wet, becoming mossy, shoots sprouting-hmmm it all began to remind me of a children's book full of twisty tangled trees with mushrooms popping and owls watching! A real English woodland from a fantasy! Sounds wonderful right? I need a woodland fantasy right about now because I awaken everyday to a winter wonderland and it's getting old! So here are Monday's Inspirations........Green and Mossy...
